Taming the Browser Beast For Writers

We're all guilty of it at some point - opening a new tab to follow an idea. Then another new tab for another idea and so on. For sites like TV Tropes, this is the kiss of death. If you know, you know!

For writers who rely on research to flesh out their work and add authority, any of these browser tabs could hold the answer or inspiration you've been searching for.

But when you try to find that one tab you need to look at, something else catches your eye and off the squirrel goes down another rabbit hole.

So how do you manage your open tabs and not worry about the possibility of your computer restarting?

Check out these four options for browser tab management!

  1. Browser bookmarks (you need Chrome/Firefox sync involved to really optimize this)

  2. Tab management extensions like OneTab or the Tab Groups feature in Chrome

  3. Read-it-later apps like Pocket

  4. Note-taking apps like Evernote as a place to hold your links till you need them - like bookmarking but in another app

Of course, the more tabs you have open, the slower your system will be as it struggles to keep everything running - another reason to capture that research information and move on!

The next question is, now you have all these tabs, bookmarks, links, and articles...how do you keep them organized?

That's coming next!
