Ready for take off?
We’ve all seen those people doing the last minute check of their cell phone before the flight attendant comes around and tells you to shut off your phones. It used to be that we were told that signals from our phones would interfere with the plane’s functioning, but now they offer wi-fi on flights so what has changed?
Well, phone signals can and do interfere with radio frequency but, when it happens it is usually brief and infrequent. Yes, a blip in communications at a critical time could be a problem but that’s not the only reason.
Who wants to sit next to someone talking to Aunt Judy for the entire 4 hour flight?
It’s common human courtesy. Airplanes are getting more and more uncomfortable, fliers are more irritated and less inclined to think of others. Add annoying cell phone conversations where everyone is trying to talk over each other and you’ve got a recipe for problems. So at the end of the day, airplane mode is more about our sanity than anything else.
Now, if we could just do something about leg room.
